Sewage Backing Up? Do This Right Now
- 1Stop using all water: no flushing, showers, laundry or dishwasher. Every gallon you use ends up on the floor.
- 2Keep kids and pets away from the water. Sewage carries bacteria.
- 3Don't use chemical drain cleaners. They won't clear a sewer line and make the cleanup more dangerous.
- 4If water is near outlets, appliances or the electrical panel, stay out of the area.
- 5Call us. We'll clear the line and tell you what caused it.

What Causes Sewer Backups in Shoreline
Shoreline grew fast after World War II, and thousands of homes from that era still rely on their original clay or concrete side sewer. Both come in short sections with a joint every few feet, and the mature conifers and hedges that make neighborhoods like Innis Arden, Highland Terrace and Briarcrest so leafy are also the main reason those joints fill with roots.
Homes on the slopes toward Puget Sound and around Echo Lake can also develop sags (bellies) where the ground has shifted, and long, rainy Northwest winters saturate the soil and reveal cracks that were building for years. Grease and "flushable" wipes finish the job.
Find the Cause With a Camera
Clearing the backup gets you working drains tonight. A camera inspection tells you if it will happen again. We run a waterproof camera through the line and show you what we find: roots, cracks, offset joints, bellies or a break. You'll know whether the line needs regular cleaning, a spot repair or replacement.
Repair or Replace?
Cleaning and maintenance
For lines in decent shape with light roots or grease. Often a yearly or every-other-year jetting.
Spot repair
One broken or offset section, with the rest of the pipe sound.
Trenchless repair or replacement
Lining or pipe bursting with minimal digging. Good under driveways, landscaping and old trees.
Full replacement
When the line has failed in several places or has collapsed.
We explain the options and prices before any work starts.
Who's Responsible for a Shoreline Side Sewer?
In Shoreline, the property owner is generally responsible for the side sewer — the pipe running from the house out to the public sewer main. If our camera shows the blockage is in the public main instead, we'll tell you so you can report it to the sewer utility.

Sewage on the Floor?
After we clear the line, anything sewage touched needs proper cleanup and disinfection. Drywall, carpet and pad usually have to be removed. If the backup reached floors or walls, we also have a water cleanup division that can handle the drying, cleanup and disinfection.

Sewer Service FAQ
Do you offer 24/7 emergency sewer service in Shoreline?
Yes. Our line is staffed around the clock, weekends and holidays included. Call and we'll tell you how soon a plumber can reach your Shoreline address.
What are the signs of a sewer line problem?
Several drains backing up at once, gurgling toilets, sewage smell, water in the lowest drain in the house, or soggy spots in the yard over the sewer line.
Will homeowners insurance cover a sewer backup?
It depends on your policy. Many policies need a separate sewer backup endorsement to cover cleanup. The sewer line repair itself is often not covered. Check with your insurer.
How long does it take to clear a sewer backup?
Most backups are cleared within one to two hours once we're on site. Repairs or replacements take longer and are scheduled after a camera inspection.
Can tree roots in my sewer line be fixed for good?
Cleaning removes roots, but they grow back through the same joints. A lining or replacement seals the pipe so roots can't get back in.
Do I need to dig up my yard to replace my sewer line?
Not always. Trenchless lining or pipe bursting can replace or seal the line with one or two small access holes.
